Domaine Albin Jacumin, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Rhône Valley, France) 2016

By John McDermott

Domaine Albin Jacumin’s 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape is showing much more typicity and youth than the 2015 from Domaine Serguier that I also recently tasted.  The color is a deeper ruby, and on the nose, it shows much more primary character too, with deep red and black fruits dominating next to a lovely baking spice note, and only faint hints of earthy tertiary scents sitting in the wings.  The palate is still lush and structured, with red and black fruits again dominating against fine grained but still present tannins.  Decent acidity and a lengthy finish round out what is a fine example of Châteauneuf, and one that will continue to age gracefully through at least the end of the decade.
