Domäne Wachau, Wachau (Niederösterreich, Austria) Grüner Veltliner 2016

The Wachau wine region of Austria is ruggedly dramatic with steep, rocky vineyards perched above the Danube River.  Austria’s finest Rieslings and Grüner Veltliner are grown here.   The wine cooperative Domäne Wachau is located in the town of Durnstein, perhaps most famous as the place where Richard the Lionheart spent a year imprisoned during the Crusades.  The grapes come from the Achleiten vineyard that is composed of thin, mineral rich soils and a long growing season, conditions that force the vines to focus energy on producing roots and result in low yields of fruit.  Low yields mean more intensity of flavors.  The grapes are hand harvested, spend a few hours of pre-fermentation maceration, pressed then fermented and aged on lees in stainless steel tanks.  The wine then spends time in large old oak casks.  It was bottled in July 2017.  I had read that Grüner Veltliner from the Achleiten vineyard is considered among the most age-worthy wines of the Wachau.  After tasting the 2016 vintage, I certainly can agree.  It displays a rich golden yellow color that promises weight in the mouth.  Aromas are layered with ripe peach, pears, white pepper and sweet almond, with smoky notes, rich round and creamy in the mouth.  Crisp acidity lifts the rich flavors and contributes to a long, resonating finish.  It is a sophisticated, complex wine that will be welcome on any table with roast chicken or a selection of cured meats.
