Eastern wine growers have had a great time being able to sort through various grape varieties from around the world that seem to fit their terroir while pleasing their clientele. This has led up to delightful choices of virtually unknown grapes, such as Petite Manseng, and somewhat neglected grapes on the West Coast, such as Cabernet Franc. Saperavi from Georgia and Ukraine seems to be the new darling of upstate New York, but I remain to be convinced. This one seems to be a quaffing wine – light red fruit without much gravitas, but with nice spicy and savory notes.
