Ernst Triebaumer put Austrian red wine on the world map in 1988 when his single vineyard Ried Mariental Blaufränkisch 1986 won first prize in a blind tasting in Vienna. Thirty-plus years later, now produced by his sons, the label continues to impress. Triebaumer’s 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon – Merlot is robust and concentrated yet remarkably fresh with rich and intense aromas of blackberry preserves, warm cassis, black cherry compote, dried tobacco leaves, and a hint of spice. The dominant Cabernet (60 percent) takes hold of the full-bodied palate packed with black fruit, framed by firm, grainy tannins and finishing on a lingering savory note.
