Fable, Western Cape (South Africa) Syrah/Mourvedre 2009

This project from American businessman and multiple-winery owner Charles Banks is showing its potential. This red wine has all of the hallmarks of a quality Rhône-style blend, and balances Old World sensibilities with New World power. The nose is reserved at first and needs some time to reveal itself. When it does, what starts as dense dark plum and blackberry aromas brightens into raspberry. Meaty, smoky, toasty, and herb notes remind me of the prime pickings of good BBQ: the burnt ends. A violet floral aroma adds elegance to the power. These aspects continue through the palate with notable acidity and tannin to provide supporting structure for the rich fruit. The finish is focused and has stony mineral notes. This is a good offering for people wanting to bridge the gap between Old World and New World wines.
