Glen Carlou, Paarl (South Africa) 2008

By Paul Lukacs

A Bordeaux blend, marked by dark fruit flavors and hints of cedar, this is a substantial wine that should benefit from a few years of cellaring.  It has the sort of tannic structure that suggests not just endurance but actual improvement with time in bottle.  One caveat, though:  While it does not display the annoying rubbery note that mars the bouquet of so many South African reds, it does carry a hint of band-aid or plastic on the palate.  Experience suggests that this odd flavor sometimes dissipates with time.   If it does here, the wine will merit a 90+ score.
