Kopke, Port (Douro, Portugal) 2021

Jul 26, 2023

By Roger Morris

Kopke lays its reputation on being the oldest Port house and on its long line of colheitas (or single-vintage wines), with most available for sale dating back a generation or two.  This single quinta release has all the requisite characteristics of the single-vintage style – nutty, sharp red fruit aromas and flavors, lots of chewy tannins and a good structure.  The only drawback is that there is little of that richness and depth of fruitiness that develop layers of flavors as the wine ages.  Of course, it does have the structure, fruit and alcohol to age well, but it will likely become only agreeably mellow years from now but without the complexity that is the touchstone of older vintage and quinta Ports.
