The 2015 Poliphemo Taurasi Riserva is made from two tiny parcels of historic Aglianico vineyards in Paternopoli, planted in 1930. Brought to Italy by the Greeks in the 6th century B.C., the Aglianico grape is experiencing a great revival in southern Italy. Aromas of ripe plums, aromatic herbs, and dark-skinned berries emerge from the glass. The full-bodied palate offers dried black cherry, blackberry, earthy thyme, and tobacco alongside a backbone of chewy tannins and vibrant acidity. The wine’s density signals that this is only at the beginning of a long, lovely evolution.
