Portuguese white wines are most often made from indigenous grape varieties. Although the grapes may be unfamiliar, these traditional varieties often offer amazing character and complexity at a very friendly price. The Maria Gomes grape, known as Fernâo Pires in other parts of Portugal, is the country’s most widely planted white grape. It does particularly well in the cool Bairrada region. The 2022 Maria Gomes Bairrada Branco from Luis Pato is a perfect example of the value to be found. It offers an enticing bouquet with a zesty combination of lemon, orange zest, pear and green apple backed by floral, almond and spice hints. On the palate, its juicy lemon, pear and apple fruits are enhanced by its nutty and spicy complexity and vibrantly clean finish. Try it with your favorite full-flavored seafood or chicken recipe.
