Matzinger Davies Wine Company, Columbia Gorge (Oregon) Grenache 2018

May 15, 2024

By Norm Roby

Noted winemakers Anna Matzinger and Michael Davies combine their talents for limited production wines.  At present, Matzinger is a consultant and previously worked for Archery Summit and Davies remains winemaker for both Rex Hill and A to Z.  This Grenache comes from the Garnier Vineyard located on the banks of the Columbia River.  It is medium garnet in color with an inviting aroma of cranberry, black tea and subtle anise.  It is big and round on the palate with pomegranate and raspberry flavors, and this solid core of ripe berries  picks up a little dusty tannin to contribute to a long finish.  The winemakers, who apparently enjoy a good pun, aged this wine for 17 months in neutral oak.  Best to drink over the next year or two.
