In 1970, Ponzi planted its original vineyard in what today is designated as the Laurelwood District. Located along the northern slopes of the Chehalem Mountains, this region is among the coolest in the Willamette Valley and the soils are distinctly volcanic. This wine combines Pinot from several estate vineyards including the original one, and the wine was aged for 10 months in French oak, 30% new. Opening quickly in the glass, the aroma combines rose petal and lovely cranberry with earthy, forest floor. Propelled by vibrant acidity, the flavors merge black cherry and plum with earthy nuances and some oak tannins. Enjoyable now with spring lamb dishes, but it will also reward short term cellaring.
