P+S (Prats & Symington), Douro (Portugal) 2009

By Rebecca Murphy

Postscriptum is Chryseia’s second label and in the Bordeaux tradition, Chryseia is only produced in the best years, while Postscriptum is produced every year and includes grapes grown for Chryseia. The 2009 vintage was a difficult one, so all suitable grapes went to this wine. It is a blend of 41% Touriga Nacional, 36% Touriga Franca, 14% Tinta Roriz and 9% Tinta Barroca. The skill of those working the vineyards, the exacting selection of grapes and the blending artistry of the winemaking team are all evident in the elegance of this wine. Even with a summer more hot and dry than normal, the fruit does not taste overripe. The flavors are of dense black fruit with floral, savory notes. It’s a full bodied wine, deep and concentrated with sturdy tannins. Open it an hour or two before serving to give it time to show at its best.
