Quinta da Romaneira, Douro DOC (Portugal) 2015

Jun 28, 2023

By Norm Roby

This quinta began producing Port in 1872, but was not legally allowed to bottle table wine under its own name until 1986 when DO changes gave single quintas the right to do so.  In 2004, the 1,100 acre estate was acquired by Christian Seely of Quinta do Noval fame who in the following year built a new winery.  Today the vineyard has 86 hectares planted principally with the  prized Douro grape varieties of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa, Tinta Roriz and Tinto Cão.  While the roster of wines offered is lengthy, Tinto is the flagship among its wines.  A blend of those four grapes and aged 14 months in 20% new French oak, this 2015 has evolved into a subtle wine of remarkable finesse.  On the nose it offers black olive, blackberry, and undertones of truffles and herbs.  Smooth on the palate, it has flavors of soft, gentle fruit, grilled meat, with light oak toast.  With some tannins in the background, it can be enjoyed now but will hold for several years.
