Quinta do Crasto, Douro (Portugal) 2010

Vinha da Ponte is one of two single-plot wines from Quinta do Crasto, made only in years when the quality of the grapes in the vineyard is exceptional. A field blend of several different grape varieties from vines over 100 years old is used to make this wine. The wine is dark and concentrated. A whiff of alcohol on the nose and a touch of heat on the palate are evidence of the 15.5% alcohol content. Heavy oak notes of vanilla, coffee, and caramel dominate the sweet ripe black fruit. The texture is velvety and supple from moderate-high tannins. This is a wine for those who prefer a more full-throttle style. I would prefer less oak so that the ripe, rich fruit could shine, but this is a serious wine nonetheless.
