Rock Ferry’s 3rd Rock Marlborough Chardonnay captures the style that drove my interest in New Zealand Chardonnay years ago. Unlike other regions, New Zealand Chardonnay is able to produce fruit that is both bright and powerful — it dominates the wine — with pear, tart red apple, and lemon pith. Meanwhile, winemaking choices give the wine a counterbalanced roundness to the body’s structure. 96% of the country’s wines are sustainable thanks to industry body, New Zealand Winegrowers’ Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand (SWNZ) program. Rock Ferry is also part of the 10% organic wineries in the country and their light handed winemaking practices show in this wine.
