Saint Clair, Marlborough (New Zealand) Pinot Noir 2009

Sep 21, 2011

By Michael Franz

As noted in this week’s review of the 2010 “Vicar’s Choice” Pinot from Saint Clair, it is amazing that a single winery would have two terrific Pinots in release at $20, given the fact that even one wine fitting this description is a rare accomplishment.  The feat is slightly less surprising in light of how strong Saint Clair’s wines are in general, but that does nothing to diminish the accomplishment under the cork in this bottle.  This wine shows a bit more body and more complex, savory flavors than the “Vicar’s Choice,” and it will actually improve for several years if you can keep your mitts off of it–which would be much easier to do if you’d never tasted it.
