I had the pleasure of sitting (via Zoom) with Sequoia Grove winemaker Jesse Fox to taste through some of the current release wines, and this first wine of the meeting set a high bar right out of the gate. The winery has some great source relationships outside of their own estate vineyards, and this wine carries a serious pedigree despite listing only the “macro” appellation. André Tchelistcheff helped select sites for the estate vineyards in Rutherford, and there is also fruit from Carneros and Oak Knoll site located further south in the valley. This widely available Chardonnay is made to be widely appealing, and it certainly hits the mark. Green apple, citrus and soft oak notes are potent in the aromatic profile, with well folded toast and spice notes accenting the fruit. The concept carries through on the palate, where a creamy texture rides to a crisp finish. You will likely find this at a discount, but it is worth more than full fare.
