Te Awa, Hawkes Bay (New Zealand) Syrah 2009

Nov 3, 2011

By Mary Ewing-Mulligan

The Hawkes Bay region of New Zealand — situated on the southern part of the North Island — is a warmer growing region than the Marlborough region that’s famous for Sauvignon Blanc, and therefore it is a prime area for red wines.  This Syrah is a beautifully harmonious wine, with soft tannins and ripe but nuanced fruit flavors. It’s dry and fairly full-bodied but far more refined than powerhouse. Aromas and flavors suggest dark berry fruit and charred meat. This wine is delightful now and ready to be enjoyed.
