Telmo Rodriguez has been exploring Spain wine regions since the early 1990s, finding and restoring old vines and varieties. Twenty years ago, he became interested in the Ribera del Duero region. It is luscious and intensely flavored with ripe black and red fruits with a hint of woody spices. It is fresh and lively in the mouth supported by smooth tannins. According to the winery website, the grapes for Matallana came from eleven unnamed vineyards in the region. Note that the label has eleven black stripes. Coincidence?
