Valley of the Moon, Sonoma County (California) Syrah 2008

May 24, 2011

By Gerald D. Boyd

This Syrah is a multi-variety, multi-appellation blend, incorporating Syrah, Petite Sirah and Cabernet Sauvignon from three appellations in Sonoma County, then aged for 18 months in French, Hungarian and American oak barrels.  The color of this brooding Syrah is a very deep ruby-black and the medium-intensity aromatics offer hints of berry and mint.  The wine has a tart entry, moderate fruit, 13.5% alcohol and a medium peppery finish.  I expected more.
