Vino Dal Basco (“Wine from the Woods”) is Gabriele Rausse’s low sulfur label, giving him a place to explore making wine in what many would consider a more natural way. Capriccioso is sourced from vineyards throughout Virginia. Made in the ancestral method, the wine is bottled part-way through its alcoholic fermentation in order to make it sparkling and it does not see disgorgement – the process of removing the dead yeast from the bottle. The nose is inviting and reminds me of a strawberry Creme Savers while the body is more traditional with strawberry, toast, and red fruit jam. The wine is crisp with a clean finish, making for an excellent brunch-time bottle.
