Woodward Canyon, Washington (United States) Chardonnay 2023

 Chardonnay is an elementally pleasing wine and maintains great popularity among wine consumers for that reason.  Because of its success, many renditions of Chardonnay are too much the same – each seeming to emulate a standard style.  If you want to re-invigorate your enthusiasm for Chardonnay, however, try this one.  It is rare for one wine to stand out with a singular character that sets it apart from the competition.  Woodward Canyon was established in 1981 and is one of the pioneering wineries in the Walla Walla Valley.  Their 2023 Chardonnay is drawn from two blocks within their Estate Vineyard, including an old vine block planted in 1978.  While many Chardonnays sit comfortably or ponderously on the palate, this one dances!  The 2023 Woodward Canyon Chardonnay combines ripe, juicy fruit with a rich texture while maintaining a refreshing character.   The bouquet is forward and appealing, with pear, apple, pineapple and citrus fruits underlain by intriguing floral and baking spice hints.  The flavors live up to the promise of the nose.  Layers of lovely pear, apple and tropical flavors are interwoven with delicate lemon, vanilla and spice tones.  It has a delectably creamy texture that is enhanced by the lemon and subtle spice nuances that give it a delicious lift that lingers at the finish.
