His writing has also appeared in Decanter, The San Francisco Chronicle, Boston Magazine, and The Tasting Panel Magazine. He received a James Beard Foundation Journalism Award in 2000 and was nominated again in 2004 and 2006. In 2008, he won the Les Grands Jours de Bourgogne Press Trophy for an article about Pouilly-Fuissé. In 2010, he was nominated for the prestigious Cordon Bleu World Food Media Awards in the best drinks journalist category.

Dr. Apstein judges frequently at international wine competitions, including the Critics Challenge Wine Competition (San Diego), Concours Mondial de Bruxelles (Croatia, Beijing, France, and Portugal), and Decanter World Wine Awards (London). He was the Chief Judge at the Challenge Millésime Bio (The Organic Wine Competition) held in Montpellier, France. Dr. Apstein is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and a member of the Division of Gastroenterology at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He lectures and writes frequently about wine and health.

He is also a freelance contributor to several international wine magazines, instructor for Capital Wine School, and consultant for 12 restaurants in the Washington, D.C. area with combined annual wine sales of $12 million. He wrote as wine columnist for The Washington Post for 11 years before leaving to help found WRO, which he has edited since its launch in 2005.

Franz is Chief Judge for two major wine competitions and has judged competitions on six continents. He has conducted more than 1,650 site visits and tastings at wineries around the world, served as an expert witness in several cases in Federal District Court, and has been interviewed dozens of times on public radio and by worldwide news broadcasts such as the BBC.

Andrew Holod

Andrew Holod’s passion for wine began with a wine course taken at Virginia Tech while earning his Industrial Design degree. That course ignited a desire to understand why a wine tastes as it does. The eight years that followed were spent in wine retailing, where he conducted tasting classes and tasted up to 100 wines per week.

During that time Andrew was accepted by the Institute of Masters of Wine as a candidate. After three years of study, he included a more hands-on approach to his education, working harvests at wineries in California, Oregon, and Spain. His engagement with Spanish wine continued with a nearly 15-year career with Aurelio Cabestrero and his import company, Grapes of Spain. Andrew currently works as Assistant Wine Manager at Schneider’s of Capitol Hill – a D.C. institution – and at cellar.com, its online portal.

Paul Lukacs was a founding contributor to winereviewonline.com, and the author of three books: Inventing Wine, The Great Wines of America and American Vintage: The Rise of American Wine.

American Vintage won the three major wine Book of the Year awards in 2001 — the James Beard Foundation, Champagne Veuve Clicquot, and the International Association of Culinary Professionals.

He passed away on June 15, 2021 after a lengthy illness.

Robert Whitley

Robert Whitley was the publisher and managing partner of Wine Review Online, author of “Wine Talk,” a column syndicated nationally by the Creators Syndicate, and a monthly contributor to the Reuters “Vine Talk” column, and director of the following international wine competitions: Critics Challenge, Sommelier Challenge, Winemaker Challenge and San Diego Challenge.

He passed away February 3, 2021. His memory will live on in this publication, in the wine competitions he founded, and in the hearts of his colleagues here and throughout the wine industry.

Gerald D. Boyd

Gerald D. Boyd has been writing about wine and spirits since 1968. He is the former editor of The Wine Spectator and was a staff wine writer for the San Francisco Chronicle.

Gerald has been a contributor to Decanter, The Wine News, Quarterly Review of Wines, and Winestate of Australia, as well as the trade magazines Vineyard & Winery Management and Hotel Food & Beverage Executive.

Gerald was an adjunct wine instructor at Santa Rosa Junior College for many years. His wine blog, Gerald D Boyd on Wine, was launched in 2019.

W. Blake Gray

W. Blake Gray has been a professional wine writer for more than two decades.

He is the U.S. Editor and a contributor to WineSearcher.com, and was formerly wine editor for the San Francisco Chronicle and food editor for SF Weekly.

In 2013, Blake was the winner of the Roederer Award for Best Online Wine Writer.

He is a contributor to Quench Magazine, and publishes a blog on multiple topics including wine and spirits, The Gray Report.

Linda Murphy

Linda Murphy is a Sonoma County-based wine writer and regular contributor to Decanter, Food & Wine, Epicurious.com, and the San Francisco Chronicle, where she served as wine editor from 2003-2006.

While at the Chronicle, she won two James Beard Awards for best food/wine section.

Prior to 2003, she was managing editor of WineToday.com, the New York Times’ wine website.

Linda is the co-author with Jancis Robinson of the book American Wine, published in 2013.
